Graphic designer Henriikka Salonen is a nature lover by heart. She lives in an old wooden house just a stone throw away from Helsinki's city centre in a neighbourhood called Käpylä. Surrounded by apple trees and lush plants she makes the most of seasonal ingredients and uses them to nourish her body inside out. She invited us over for a glimpse of her life while she was making the most of this years harvest and preparing for the winter season.
NORDIC BEAUTY WISDOM: MEET GRAPHIC DESIGNER HENRIIKKA SALONEN
"I look at beauty from a holistic perspective: I feel beautiful when I'm comfortable and at peace with who I am. I make the most of what I've got and often use the ingredients in my kitchen cupboards to treat my skin and body. I often save the leftover coffee grounds from my morning brew and use them as a facial scrub. The natural oils in coffee beans make my skin so smooth I don't even need to use a moisturizer afterwards."
"Mornings are always an opportunity to start over with an open mind. Cherishing a peaceful moment while enjoying great coffee and nice breakfast feels amazing. A big bowl of slow-cooked oats topped with vitamin C rich cloudberries is a real treat. For an extra boost I like to add a swirl of immune-boosting honey and a spoonful of wheat germ oil, which is full of vitamin E and a great alternative to fish oil."
"Central heating is really harsh for the skin and hair as it dries them out, which is why I like to keep the temperature quite low at home. I always rinse my hair with cold water after washing to make it strong and shiny and I have a humidifier at home because it keeps my hair and skin happy. A walk in the rain is even better – it's the best facial ever!"

"I like to think that taking care of beauty is like taking care of plants. I don't just treat the surface but nourish myself inside out. I work at brand design agency Werklig and spend a lot of time in front of a large screen, which can make my skin really dry. I like to make myself a little beauty drink by adding a splash of cold-pressed sea buckthorn juice to a glass of mineral water. If my skin feels tight I'll spray it using Lumene Glow Refresh Vitamin C Mist. Vitamin C is so important for the wellbeing especially during the dark winter season."
"I love plants and flowers and like to get creative with nature's offerings. I also love hiking through the woods foraging mushrooms and berries. I freeze nettle and dry herbs to make tea and to use them in cooking. Spending time in nature is the best way to reduce stress – it's when I feel my most beautiful."
